About Pointing Calculator

This calculator estimates the amount of mortar required to point brickwork and blockwork, it is suitable for lime mortar and other kinds of mortar including ordinary portland cement mortar.

Standard Walls

Simply enter the area or wall dimensions if you're repointing a standard stretcher bond wall, double the estimate if pointing both sides.

Other Walls

Enter the total linear metres of pointing for anything else. This includes walls with non-uniform masonry, staggered courses or traditional bonds like flemish bond, english bond and english garden wall bond.

Total Linear Metres

This is the total sum of length of all joints to be pointed.

A ballpark figure can be estimated although there's no mathematical formula to calculate this accurately for a non-standard wall.

Estimating Total Linear Metres

Firstly, chalk out a 1m² area of the wall, this is used to establish an average. Avoid areas with a dissimilar pattern from the rest of the wall and use a chalk that is easily removed.

Measure along all the joints within the marked area, add them together to establish the linear metres per m². If the masonry is not straight as with random rubble walling you may need to follow the joints with a long piece of string.

Finally, take the total m² of the wall and multiply by the linear metres per m² to reach the final estimate.
