Product Details

KEIM Royalan is a mineral silicate based paint system that is breathable and suitable for traditional lime render although it can be used for all types of masonry including brick, stone and even ceramic tiles.

The potassium silicate mineral binder reacts chemically with the substrate creating a strong, permanent bond between the paint and the underlying substrate.

It is a classic mineral paint, its extreme durability means it can be used in any location including harsh and exposed coastal areas, tropical regions and those subject to continual pollutants and contaminants.

The crystalline nature of KEIM Royalan allows vapour to pass freely through the coating from the substrate whilst at the same time protecting against the ingress of moisture, eliminating blistering, cracking or peeling associated with conventional paints.

KEIM Royalan is manufactured using natural earth oxide pigments which are UV stable and do not fade with time, their crystalline nature providing a high light reflecting matt appearance, which remains bright and vibrant, even on dull days.

Multi-Coat System

This product is used in combination with other products in the KEIM Royalan system. It is a minimum two coat system, lime render typically requires three coats (see application).

Storage

KEIM Mineral Paints are supplied in either metal or plastic containers. All materials should be checked once received to ensure that the containers are intact, then stored appropriately until required.

Materials should be stored in a cool dry area and protected from frost. the materials freeze then this is likely to damage the chemical composition of the paint and affect its performance.

The shelf life of most KEIM Mineral Paints is approximately 12 months, if kept cool, but frost free in tightly closed containers.

Preparation

All loose, flaking and unstable materials must be removed back to a sound edge; edges should be feathered in using sand or emery paper.

Ensure that any paint materials left remaining and the underlying substrate are sound and adhering well.

Any glossy or shiny surfaces should be thoroughly flattened down using sand or emery paper to create a good key.

Treat any surfaces affected by mould, fungal or lichen growth and kill algae spores.

All surfaces must be thoroughly washed down with clean cold water to remove all surface dirt and dust.

Application

After suitable preparation, products are applied by brush, roller or airless spray and worked well into the surface leaving at least 12 hours between coats. The number and kind of coats depends on the type of surface.

Applying to Lime Render (Unpainted)

Application to lime render requires a preliminary coat of KEIM Royalan Dilution to reduce surface porosity and maximise cost effectiveness.

1st Coat KEIM Royalan Dilution
Reduces surface porosity
2nd Coat KEIM Royalan with
KEIM Royalan Dilution
Diluted 20% by weight
3rd Coat KEIM Royalan
Final coat using paint undiluted.

The product should be applied when the lime render is fully cured. Lime render is extremely alkaline when first applied, this proposes a serious risk to the paint and often causes bubbling.

The alkalinity continues to diminish and will eventually neutralise when the render cures. A simple PH testing kit containing litmus paper can be used to check alkalinity before painting if there are any concerns.

Applying to Other Surfaces

Application to other masonry and types of surfaces is as follows.

Highly Absorbant Surfaces

Primer KEIM Royalan Dilution
Reduces surface porosity

In addition to directions below, surfaces with an extremely high level of absorbancy require pre-treatment with a preliminary coat of dilution to stabilise the surface and reduce surface porosity and maximise cost effectiveness.

Unpainted Brickwork & Smooth Surfaces

1st Coat KEIM Royalan with
KEIM Royalan Dilution
Diluted 20% by weight
2nd Coat KEIM Royalan
Final coat using paint undiluted.

Unpainted Roughcast & Pebbledash Surfaces

1st Coat KEIM Royalan with
KEIM Royalan Dilution
Diluted 20% by weight
2nd Coat KEIM Royalan with
KEIM Royalan Dilution
Diluted 5% by weight

Painted Brickwork & Smooth Surfaces

1st Coat KEIM Royalan Grob with
KEIM Royalan Dilution
Diluted 20% by weight
2nd Coat KEIM Royalan
Final coat using paint undiluted.

Painted Roughcast & Pebbledash Surfaces

1st Coat KEIM Royalan with
KEIM Royalan Dilution
Diluted 40% by weight
2nd Coat KEIM Royalan with
KEIM Royalan Dilution
Diluted 5% by weight

KEIM Mineral Paints should be applied onto wind dry surfaces where the moisture content of the surface (to a depth of approximately 5mm) should be no greater than 18% by volume.

Drying Time

Materials need a minimum of 12 hours to dry in-between coats regardless of the substrate.

Mineral paints need to properly chemically bond to the substrate and therefore it is important to observe the 12 hours, even if the paint appears 'dry' after only a few hours.

Different application techniques will deliver different paint finishes and slight different consumptions rates and we can supply test samples for customers to ascertain the desired finish and calculate material consumption.
